All alternative treatments aim to treat the body as a whole and endeavour to get to the root cause of the ‘dis-ease’, dealing with this, not the symptom. For the best results the participation of the client is required. Ultimately the therapist is not responsible for the client’s health.
In holistic therapies the emphasis is placed on the client taking responsibility for their own state of health. In orthodox medicine the tendency is to hand over responsibility to the doctor and expect them to cure all ills — this is a bit of a tall order.
‘Dis-ease’ is a direct result of one’s own thoughts and actions. The mind is immensely powerful and affects every cell in the body. This causes chemical changes to take place. Negative emotions such as anxiety, grief, fear and worry will cause negative repercussions. The client must take responsibility. A genuine desire for health and willingness to let go of disease is of vital importance to any healing process.
A practitioner will be compassionate, caring and dedicated to the client’s welfare, but no practitioner can decide for someone whether he/she is going to get well. The practitioner doesn’t heal — only the body heals, but he/she helps to balance all the body’s systems. Holistic therapies work on three specific levels — Physiological, Psychological and Spiritual and since all the systems are closely interrelated, anything that affects one part will ultimately affect the whole.
"A wise soul should realise that good health is their most valuable possession"
